AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
TO HUMAN MINDS
EXPLORE OUR DEVELOPMENTAL MAP
The field of Western psychology has evolved for over a century and now, creating over 500 different therapeutic modalities. Yet, without a coherent organising framework about the very thing we treat - the human mind - many clinicians navigate between their clients' complex presentations and a variety of therapeutic approaches without a clear picture of how they all fit together. Many practitioners remain confused by some of the core questions of their work:
“Why is my client presenting in this way?”
“How do I know which treatment will address this client’s underlying issues?”
Our Developmental Map hopes to bring clarity to such questions. It strives to make sense of the complexity within each client's mind by weaving together a cohesive perspective of their development, creating the opportunity to respond compassionately and intelligently to their presenting challenges. Our Developmental Map is the backbone for all of our training, education, supervision and clinical approach. You can explore it through our interactive visualisation below.
Our Developmental Map has been formulated over the last 15 years by Nigel Denning, Dr. Tra-ill Dowie and the Education team at IP&M.

WHO IS THIS FOR?
For mental health and allied health professionals.
This resource is primarily designed for mental health and allied health professionals:
- Psychologists
- Psychotherapists
- Social Workers
- Psychiatrists
- Nurses
- Counsellors
- Spiritual carers
It is designed as a support for 1-1 therapeutic work, case formulation and treatment planning. However, given that our map addresses the human mind from a systemic and ecological perspective, this map may also support work in community development, policy design, and larger work focused on systems change. This map may also support individuals who are striving to understand themselves more deeply.

What if you saw your client’s chronic anxiety as an intelligent adaption?
This paper Context & Adaptation explores the perspective that there may be nothing 'wrong' with your client. What if their presenting symptoms reflected and adaptive and resilient response? What if their current challenge was not permanent but something that can change?

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
In attempting to synthesise many complex fields into one map - including neurobiological science, developmental psychology, complexity theory, and ecological systems thinking - our Developmental Map is an ambitious project. It is inevitably making large assumptions, simplifications, and will likely always remain incomplete.
Our hope is to continually evolve the map, integrate scientific knowledge, create new research, refine the philosophical framework, develop novel artistic representations, and refine communication.
We would love to hear from you if you would like to contribute to the evolution of the map or have any feedback.
